A polychrome, stamped and decorated leather panel, Italy, half of XVII century.
Description:This polychrome leather panel is stamped and decorated with exuberant vegetal decoration. This type of leatherwork was referred to as ‘Cordoban’, cordobanes or guadameciles.
The fashion for decorated leather was introduced by the Arabs to Spain in the 14th century and was then popularised throughout Europe by the Spaniards, particularly in the 16th and 17th centuries. Panels were made using tanned sheepskin leather, covered with silver foil, stamped and painted with lacquers (gold meccatura) before being punched to highlight the patterning. Once decorated, they were sewn together and used both as upholstery and to make altar frontals, curtains, covers and cushions.
In Italy, local production of such leatherwork began in the early 16th century. The art reached its apex in the 17th century before experiencing a prolonged decline during the course of the 18th century.
The leatherwork offered here is placed over a wooden panel and features, at its centre, a noble coat-of-arms dating from a later time.
