A jar with its lid, Japan, Satzuma, Edo period, mid of XIX century.
Description:This jar, which comes complete with its own lid, is made from smooth, porous, fine-grained porcelain, which is chamois-grey in colour. The jar features a translucent, straw-coloured coating, with fine craquelures visible on the lighter section of the jar.
The decoration on the lid is mostly composed of stylised motifs interwoven with a minute, hanabishi-style nishiki mosaic – i.e. lozenge-shaped with stylised corollas.
The knob features a fruit with leaf.
Underlining the edge of the jar, there is a nishiki border, while branches with leaves and pomegranate fruits – symbol of the month of June, representing re-growth and abundance – decorate the rest of the surface. There are also butterflies, symbol of gentleness and fantasy.
The polychrome enamel colours used include kingfisher green, blue, red and gold. They have been applied so abundantly as to be in relief.
Age:Mid of XIX century.
