Description:The Wilkens & Söhne, Silverware maker founded in 1810 by Martin Heinrich Wilkens (1782-1869), is the oldest silver manufacturer in the world established as a brand and one of the most steeped in tradition. In its history of about 200 years, this Bremen silver manufacturer’s cutlery and accessories represent to this day the state of the art of table culture.
This big art nouveau wine cooler has the typical decoration of the time: three iris flowers with leaves, made as they were single sculptures with the lost-wax casting method and fixed on the wine cooler with many little silver bolts.
The surface is clean except the base that has a carved japanese decoration simulating water.
The wine cooler includes a metal gilded container.
Marks:
1) a stylised press, Wilkens's emblem;
2) 800: purity degree 800/1000;
3) crescent moon and a crown (Halbmond und Krone): national mark (Reichsmark);
4) Janetti: jewelry store in via Condotti, 19, Rome. Probably the Wilkens seller of the time;
5) 144376: serial number indicating the item year of production. For 1902 the first serial number is 140202 and the last 145494.
Under the metal gilded container there is a mark certifying that it is not made of silver (Einsatz Unecht).
